Fluidizing Hopper and Feeder
Possible the most overlooked piece of equipment in the finishing process is the
fluidizing hopper/feeder. Some of the critical elements of the fluidizing hopper
are: Level control: An excellent quality level control will facilitate the fluidizing
feeder to sustain a consistent powder height and a constant feed rate. Fluidizing plenum: This piece of equipment is designed to dispense the air uniformly
over the fluidizing membrane, thus providing uniformed fluidization throughout the
feeder hopper. However, when dealing with transfer efficiency more fluidizing airflow
is not better. Having too much air or non-uniformed distribution of air will result
in extremely aggressive fluidization in areas, resulting in the powder pump's efficiency
being reduced causing the powder pump to draw air, reducing the powder flow rate. Venting: The best method of removing excess air is through the use of a direct
vent. Powder feed/ hoppers are in essence pressure vessels, which receive powder
through three or more venturi transfer pumps. The pressure from these pumps and
fluidizing bed must be released from the hopper feeder. A direct vent design relieves
this internal pressure. When designing and/ setting up your finishing equipment, selecting the right hopper/
feeder is as important as selecting the right powder coating spray gun, booth, and
powder coating.
