Color and Gloss Choices in Powder Coating
Individual custom powder coating colors simply costs too much to make for one application.
For this reason, many coaters will have sample panels from the powder manufacturers.
There are powder coatings that strongly resemble granite, as well as nearly every
imaginable color so that with persistence you should be able to find the exact color
you are looking for. Gloss is measured in percentages when viewed at a given degree with many measurements
of gloss being taken at a 60-degree angle. Therefore, a 35% gloss is relatively
low when compared to the high gloss of 90% sheen. In addition, image depth is another
factor that many consider when measuring gloss. Image depth is the finish's ability
to act as a mirror. When choosing a color and gloss, remember that even though
dark colors in a very high gloss are beautiful they tend to show every smudge, fingerprint,
and speck of dirt. Currently, there are several clear powder coats on the market, which can be topcoated
over other liquid spray paints and powders that provide additional gloss and depth.
However, the application is beyond the ability of many coaters to apply successfully.
Therefore, make sure that you view a sample of their work first. When powder coatings are not applied well a surface condition known as orange peel
can occur. Orange peel looks like it's name implies like the skin of an orange.
The condition is a common problem with some powders, and worsens as the film thickness
increases.
